Handling the emotional outbursts and aggression of others may be considered “all in a day’s work” for some, but for most health care professionals it is important to learn practical ways to minimize and de-escalate difficult patients, caregivers, or guardians. These tactics have become even more important to learn during the ongoing pandemic, as patients continue to grapple with stress and feelings of overwhelm.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

recognize a potentially disruptive patient;
describe verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques;
prepare for a visit with a patient with a history of disruption; and
list de-escalation techniques to avoid.
