The closed claim studies found in this publication are based on actual malpractice claims from Texas Medical Liability Trust (TMLT). They illustrate how actions by physicians led to allegations of medical liability and how risk management techniques may have either prevented the outcome or increased the physician’s defensibility. The ultimate goal in publishing this book is to help physicians practice safe medicine.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this educational activity, the reader should be able to:
discuss common causes of medical liability claims in surgical specialties;
identify how communication lapses between staff, physicians, and patients may jeopardize optimal surgical care;
explain how good follow-up and results tracking procedures can increase patient safety and helpprevent malpractice claims; and
recognize strategies to improve patient safety, avoid medical liability claims, and enhance defensibility in the event of a lawsuit.
