Maternal morbidity can be defined as any unexpected health problem that occurs due to pregnancy or childbirth that has a negative impact on the patient’s well-being or ability to function. The U.S. maternal mortality rate has increased in recent years, as will be discussed further in this article.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
describe current contributing risks of maternal mortality and morbidity;
list the immediate warning signs of complications that can result in maternal mortality;
summarize how implicit bias may affect maternal care for at-risk patient populations; and
identify ways to lower rates of maternal mortality and morbidity during the prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum periods.
