Medical liability suits are rarely the result of one error, but rather a cascade or system of factors that lead to multiple errors. Additionally, patients often cite interpersonal aspects of care, such as poor communication or feeling rushed, as central to the decision to sue. Understanding these factors may help you avoid litigation (or a medical board action) and enhance patient safety.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

recognize practical strategies to increase patient safety, avoid litigation, and enhance defensibility in the event of a lawsuit;
discuss the importance of practice protocols for tracking and review of diagnostic test results;
identify tactics to avoid medication errors; and
explain how complete medical records and good documentation techniques can help prevent medical liability claims.
