Informed consent poses ethical and moral obligations for all physicians. Substantial liability and related financial risks to the provider can result from any surgery, as well as medical outcomes with profound, unfortunate consequences for patients and caregivers. Anesthesiologists and other anesthesia providers, surgeons, and anyone else involved in decision-making surrounding the use of anesthesia can find themselves exposed to legal or disciplinary action if they do not take pre-operative patient discussions seriously.

Please note that this CME activity does not meet TMLT's discount criteria. Physicians completing this CME activity will not receive a premium discount.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
  • describe appropriate steps for obtaining informed consent from patients prior to using anesthesia during a medical procedure;
  • list the risks associated with failing to obtain proper informed consent;
  • review and explain important safety protocols;
  • identify key steps in properly handling an anesthesia-related surgical accident; and
  • discuss ways to stay updated on best practices.
