This article outlines the incidence of workplace violence in the health care setting; offers steps to prevent it; describes de-escalation strategies to use if confronted by agitated patients or family members; and lists “next steps” to take in the aftermath of workplace violence.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
  • discuss statistics related to assaults on health care providers;
  • identify patients or their family members who could become disruptive;
  • identify drug-seeking patients who may become aggressive;
  • list verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques to avoid conflict; and
  • learn recommendations to help recover after an assault.
 
CME Credit Statement:
The Texas Medical Liability Trust is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Test:
