The Privacy and Security Toolkit

For Medium to Large Practices

(more than 6 practitioners or more than 1 location)

Comparison Tool

is a brief comparison of the federal and Texas privacy and security laws. It has been updated to reflect changes from the HIPAA Omnibus Rule and Texas SB 1609 (2013) and SB 1610 (2013).

Physician practices, as Covered Entities, should review their existing HIPAA/HITECH policies, procedures, and practices. Modifications to these policies, procedures, and practices will need to be made to reflect the changes to federal and Texas privacy laws.

Introduction to Developing Customized Physician Office Training

is another tool in the toolkit.

The purpose of this tool is to help physician offices develop their own HIPAA training.  The objectives of the toolkit include:

•To introduce the concepts of planning education for adult learners

•To discuss training requirements of federal and Texas medical privacy and security laws

•To guide you through a step-by-step process of developing, presenting, and documenting your training

•To provide a sample policy and procedure on developing your training

•To provide training outline

Guide to Getting Started for Medium to Large Practices

is the largest part of the toolkit.

For medium to large physician practices, this guide will assist in understanding the federal and Texas medical privacy and security laws, including the HIPAA Omnibus rule.

•To present an overview of federal and Texas medical privacy and security laws

•To develop a step-by-step process for a medium to large practice to review their current policies and procedures related to federal and Texas medical privacy and security

•To understand the impact of the recent changes
