Original release date: November 1, 2016Review & re-release date: January 15, 2023 Expiration date: January 15, 2026 The closed claim studies published in this article contain errors in communication, such as failing to inform or follow up; making medication errors; or failing to create or maintain accurate documentation. Each case describes how actions on the part of physicians led to allegations of professional liability, and how risk management techniques may have either prevented the outcome or increased the likelihood of successfully defending the physician.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- describe the importance of good communication between providers for continued patient care;
- discuss the importance of documenting oral communication in the medical record;
- summarize the physician's responsibility for following up on test results; and
- describe a process for ensuring the receipt and communication of diagnostic test results.
